Cultura y tradiciÓN
October is always one of the busiest months here in Louisiana, and we’re feeling it! After Festivals Acadiens et Créoles we went almost straight into a week at Blackpot Camp in Eunice and then into the Blackpot Festival, and here we are and it’s suddenly Halloween! Weeks of music, dancing, eating, and catching up with old friends are what October is all about down here, and so we thought we’d share a slice of the comraderie with y’all. For years, our friends Epi & Cruz Martínez have come down to the Blackpot Camp and festival to share their unique blend of Texas (Tejano) Conjunto music with us. Their music and story is an interesting contrast and parallel to the Cajun music experience - similar instrumentation with the use of accordions, and similar strong traditions of song, food, and dance that are passed down through the generations through oral tradition, but with it’s own unique sound and voice. Their music has become a staple at Blackpot throughout the years, and we’ve learned a lot from them that we can’t wait to share with you.
